Scholars Lounge and Concourse Open House

Thursday, February 2, 2017

4:00pm – 6:00pm
Hesburgh Library East Concourse and Scholars Lounge

Please join the Hesburgh Libraries on February 2nd for a campus open house as we mark the completion of the Scholars Lounge and Concourse Phase of Hesburgh Library renovation. All Notre Dame faculty, students, and staff are invited to share in this milestone celebration.

Enjoy refreshments and view plans for upcoming phases of renovation. You will also have the opportunity to share your feedback on the transformation thus far.

The Concourse Phase of renovation has several features. One highlight is the newly created Scholars Lounge, located directly across from the Carey Auditorium. Intended as a space for conversation and casual study, it has already become a favorite destination for faculty and students. Another feature of this phase is the transformation of the Concourse, with the introduction of floor to ceiling glass on the second level of the center Concourse. The phase also includes improved staff spaces on both the first and fourth floors.

As a reminder, you can see plans, maps, photos, and webcams of the projects on the renovation website renovation.library.nd.edu. Please visit the website for renovation updates and tips for navigating the building during construction.

10th Floor Open House

Monday, February 8th

4:30pm – 6:00pm
Hesburgh Library — 10th Floor

Join us February 8th for an open house and a look at the new and improved Hesburgh Library 10th Floor!

The Graduate School and the Hesburgh Libraries will host an Open House and Cookie Celebration for the renewed 10th Floor. Stop by for cookies, refreshments, prizes, and more, on Monday, February 8th between 4:30 and 6:00 pm. Tour the floor, network with friends and colleagues, and offer your feedback on the 10th Floor renovation.

The 10th Floor is the first of the tower floors to be transformed as a part of the Hesburgh Library’s master plan for building renovation. Key features include: new, open-concept, assigned graduate student carrels within the Graduate Student Enclave, an appointed 10th Floor Reading Room, lighted study tables, and seating areas around the newly exposed windows. New lighting, flooring, shelving and seating throughout have given the floor a long-needed renewal and have transformed the experience and usability of the space.

These new spaces will more closely connect faculty and students with the scholarly resources that inspire their research and learning. In partnership with faculty and graduate students from the Department of History and related disciplines, the steering committee and renovation planners worked to develop solutions to meet diverse user needs. Ultimately, the goal is to foster communities of scholars and to help empower all students to create new knowledge that furthers the Notre Dame mission.

The steering committee is open to—and hoping for—your feedback to guide the thinking about the renovation of additional tower floors in the future.

Please join us and celebrate!

Farewell to the Floor

Wednesday, December 10th

4:00pm – 6:00pm
“Farewell to the Floor” Campus Open House
Hesburgh Library — 2nd Floor North

Please join us for a campus open house as we launch Hesburgh Library Renovation, Restoring an Icon: Phase One. All students, faculty and staff are invited to share in celebrating this milestone event.

We’ll say farewell to sections of the second floor, rows and rows of wooden carrels, tables, and other familiar touchstones we’ve come to know and love.

Enjoy music from the past five decades of the building's history, holiday sweets, popcorn and hot cocoa. Renderings and plans of the vision about to be realized will be on display. Be sure to share favorite memories and your well wishes for another 50 years by signing the floor! While the floor will “disappear” in the weeks to come, we’ll have a photo memory to cherish and share.

Visit renovation.library.nd.edu for all the latest Hesburgh Library Renovation news and to follow the story of renovation every step of the way.
